Response to Cost of Living Payment for Scottish Households

CEO of Energy Action Scotland, Frazer Scott, said today

“The quantum of support provided by UK Government to Scottish Government is simply inadequate.

“This payment appears to be better targeted to the households most in need compared to England but nonetheless this will provide little comfort to the 593,000 Scottish households in extreme fuel poverty.

“The absence of scaled support means that these households will be unable to afford an adequate level of thermal comfort to maintain their health and wellbeing. People will be forced to choose between heating and eating.

“Nor is there anything to build the capacity of the advice and support sector that will inevitably be left to deal with the unfolding human crisis. The very real tragedy is declining health and wellbeing and excess deaths attributable to fuel poverty.

“The Finance Secretary admitted that it was insufficient, and we completely agree. Much more needs to be done by the UK Government to provide meaningful, impactful support for those in the direst of circumstances.”
