Cold Weather Payments

A Cold Weather Payment is intended to help towards extra heating costs during very cold weather. A payment of £25 is paid automatically for each seven day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March.

Who can get Cold Weather Payments?

People may eligible for a Cold Weather Payment if they are on certain qualifying benefits.

How are Cold Weather Payments made?  

Payment will be made in the same way as the person’s benefits and will be sent out automatically to those who qualify. The amount is a set figure. Cold Weather Payments have no effect on other benefits.

Under the Social Security (Scotland) Bill, Cold Weather Payments are being devolved to the Scottish Government. This payment will be called Cold Spell Heating Assistance. It should start to be paid from November 2021 onwards.
